Hello class, today I will be giving a tutorial in the art of minecraft texture, we will start by asking what “texture” means in minecraft. (please note, unlike other tutorials, this will be delving into the fundamentals of minecraft building, as i just want to teach the principles and have the readers use the knowledge to make their own structures).

Texture can mean how rough or smooth a block looks compared to similar blocks of its color and texturing scheme, this can also refer to added details that protrude or indent upon a structure, in order to make the surface look less flat

first, we will deal with block texture:

as seen above, the “stone-y” textures above have been laid out from roughest to smoothest, this can be useful in many ways, such as if you want to show that a stone monument has been decaying, and based on how rough certain patches are you can tell how long its been there. For this however I have made a simple quarry.

The “rougher” textures are placed on the bottom, to signify they are the deeper, less stable rock, and you may notice that there is no polished diorite, however for the sake of this build it is not necissary to add as it may seem unnatural given the quarry seen.

Next, we have protruding and intruding texture, here is a simple statue, made out of common stone products, holding some sort of tool:

now observe if we add stone buttons to all possible sides of the block, the tool then becomes identifiable as a medieval morningstar

This is an example of protruding texture. Buttons, trap doors, and levers are commonly used items to use for added texture that protrudes from the main block.

Affraid thats the end of the tutorial for today, let me know if you guys want more of these general fundamental tutorials.

Bob Ross Rules!! Great tutorial and nice statue – one itty bitty suggestion – the signs aren’t too easy to read in the first picture (or perhaps its just me old eye bones). But hey, how about those happy trees and clouds!   🙂

@Palmerageddon @Salty_shay I can see this got “meh” reactions, it was just an experiment with the fundamentals, this is my first attempt at any type of tutorial so that may play a part :/

No it wasn’t a “meh” reaction.

I thought it was very informational, I had never thought about layers in the ground, I’d usually just do dirt, then stone. Pretty boring right?

Now I know in future to think a bit more.

    I felt I learnt something.

@Palmerageddon eh I’m just saying it’s not as good as other tutorials, may make a group here soon for tutorials like this titled “the snooty art college of Wadsworth” (WIP name btw)
