Thanks guys, I used Adobe Illustrator cc for this. I have the student/teacher subscription to Adobes Creative Cloud suite since we home school the kids. Which is pretty sweet.

Before I was able to get the Adobe suite I used free open source software like http://inkscape.org/ for vector graphics instead of Illustrator and http://www.gimp.org/ as a replacement for Photoshop.
