Hi,
The past three days or so I have been experiencing very bad lag whenever I try to enter the nether. When I enter a portal, the game begins to teleport me, but lags on the loading screen. By the time the game catches up and I can see/move around in the nether, my game client has already finished the countdown in to teleport me back to the overworld. This makes it effectively impossible to travel between the nether and the overworld using portals.
I know a bit of lag is to be expected with nether portals, but its only been the past three days or so that I have been unable to use portals at all. I have not changed hardware or anything else which would cause an increase in client-side lag. I’ve also tested my network speeds, which have not changed since before the start of the issue.
As far as in-game things I have tested, it seems the problem is slightly worse if I am teleporting to or from an area that already has a lot going on, such as animal farms or beacons. If there is nothing happening in an area I can go through a portal maybe once in every 15 tries, whereas I can never get through to an area with a beacon.
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems? If not, does anyone have suggestions of other things I can test?
Update: Turning render distance down to 2 chunks seems to be a temporary fix for the problem. It’s a pain to play that way though, and I have never had trouble with the default render settings in the past.

Message me about joining Vault-Tec!July 9, 2015 at 6:17 pm #17190I appreciate the suggestion, but unfortunately that is not a viable alternative. Let me clarify, I’m looking for a solution to the problem of unusual amounts of portal lag, not just a work around. Also, my nether bases are very far away from nether spawn. It would be unreasonable to walk.
July 9, 2015 at 6:23 pm #17192You’d just have to walk once, if you’re willing to use a /sethome

Message me about joining Vault-Tec!July 9, 2015 at 8:45 pm #17198That’s a good workaround, but it still doesn’t solve the core problem, the portals themselves not working properly.
@godsdead do you have any suggestions?July 9, 2015 at 9:45 pm #17202@Ephrygian Im not having any issues, I will need to reproduce the issue to classify it as an issue and not just your internet connection, This thread will stay open to anyone else experiencing exceptional lag in teleporting, you may have just been unfortunate timing trying to teleport at peek time, you need to attempt this over a wide time-span to see if its a continual error for you, not just a few times over the same time period.
July 9, 2015 at 11:00 pm #17208Understood. If nobody else is experiencing the issue, it’s probably my connection. I’m in the US, and it just occurred to me that I only tested my speeds against nearby servers. I’ll perform more thorough tests throughout the week. If the problem does not resolve itself and I can’t get to the bottom of it, I’ll check back in.
Thanks for the input!
