This is a fantastic guide that everyone should read! The author is spot on. How you decide to use the available space is what gives a settlement its distinct character, more so than even the architecture!

Amen @PaulOnFire. This is how I wish towns and cities were structured, what I think makes it more impressive is that he built this on flat-land and still made it look like a natural old city with nooks and crannies.
