Players are shown on the map based on Light level, so hiding in a dark cave would not show you on the map.
Since we can set the light level option on the map settings, this means we could make it so only players that are out in direct sunlight are shown on the live map, this may only show players during daylight and not inside buildings, so it could be used to figure out your location during the day and then travel at night undetected.
Why change this?
Everyone is sick of being hunted down on the map, especially by crews.
Other options
Its possible to hide people based on a variety of factors, I would like to keep it the simplest as possible. For instance we could do it via command or permission to hide, but this doesn’t seem fair or would be abused. It needs to be the same for all players.

March 10, 2016 at 3:51 pm #30580<p style=”text-align: left;”>I like the idea for direct sunlight only, (Actually Voted For it) even though it will making hunting people down harder. This however will only encourage people to make bases underground (we have enough underground bases and box things on the server).</p>
March 10, 2016 at 3:58 pm #30581In my personal opinion I’d like the option for you to just lower the light levels needed for map
March 10, 2016 at 7:25 pm #30582I don’t want anymore underground boxes ;-;
It is just as easy to make a pretty castle or fort above ground that can’t be seiged. This isn’t factions. With only direct sunlight revealing a players location on live map, I fear it will become a factions server with everything build 100% out of necessity. The piratey charm and intricate architecture on this server are already not as common. The change would further endanger it.
March 10, 2016 at 8:30 pm #30587Light levels should be put up a little bit, but not a whole load.
March 10, 2016 at 8:40 pm #30588To be honest, I’d be happy to change my box into a castle but eventually people will just never be on the map. It’s not that they live in underground bases or anything it’s just that they’ll hide, always, forever, isolated. They might come out briefly but it’ll be annoying because whenever I don’t wanna be raided (like I’m building and stuff) I always have to do it in the open. I do think that people who have a building should be raided, and shown on the map. So idk, maybe we can make builders mode or something where you don’t get shown on the map. I believe that you would have to place a matter of 200-500 blocks before it turns off in an hour and that’s how we know you abused it if you placed under that. Sorry for the rough idea and going off centre, I’m not thinking straight.
Ironic
March 10, 2016 at 10:08 pm #30590my idea is maybe make it so only light levels 6+ can be seen on the map, so caving may be able to hide you

March 10, 2016 at 10:43 pm #30591if only direct sunlight shows players, then everyone with underground bases wont ever be visable, and the players that will be visable would be anyone with a town or above ground base/castle (granted they are outside the structures) and newbies that do not have established bases. I like cap’s idea for the 6+ light level. also, what would happen when night time comes around? would that still count as “direct sunlight”?

For instance, anyone without an established base would become a prime target – deckhands, cadets, and sailors… I also sense a rise in the number of stone brick boxes in the future. This would also make sieges even less effective in the long run.

One of the main problems on the server right now is the incapability of raiding an old player’s base (the smart ones) because all the hard blocks make it impossible unless you get lucky. So what’s wrong with this? Well, everyone resorts to killing the less-aware players that don’t fully understand the whole hard blocks thing. If everyone lives in underground or in boxes (which everyone will move to.) then the same thing will happen: Everyone will move to kill the less-aware players more often again. (Deckies, cadets and sailors)
EDIT: Also, if everyone can avoid the map even more by hiding in boxes, then towns will get worked on less and we will have less nice looking structures and soon the server might just look like a Factions server…which would be awful. Nobody likes floating obsidan boxes. :/
March 10, 2016 at 11:04 pm #30595Just to clear up anyone that’s confused; You will be hidden if you are inside or if its night, and only shown on the map if its daylight is what im trying to get at haha
Another option, just found this:
# If true, player positions/status is protected (login with ID with dynmap.playermarkers.seeall permission required for info other than self)
protected-player-info: falseThe reason im thinking about this, is I hate people that get hunted down, thats the entire reason I think we need a change, when we have crews now they target people.
March 10, 2016 at 11:43 pm #30596Well as a newer player to the server, I think things are decent the way they are. I think instead of making it to where ignorant players are pampered and protected(therefore making that system abuse-able by players who wish to be left alone or hide like pansies) that you make the current system… easier to get to know? For instance, when i joined this server, I had some help. I was told quite a few things about how to lock chests, how not to get hunted down, etc. For newer players, who dont have that type of help when they start, they should have easier access to those types of information, like how to avoid showing on the map, how to make secure bases, and things like that.
March 11, 2016 at 12:15 am #30597Also, I think that some of the other plugins that are considered broken(stats? Chat filter?) should be fixed or tweaked before the game is completely changed. I mean I saw the word “analogue” filtered just now..
March 11, 2016 at 12:17 am #30599@Pughpunk, I am so happy to hear that players have helped you to get started. This is what creates a great community. Whoever helped you, send them my regards ;D. Anyways, the guides section on forums as well as the wiki are perfect places for newbie to get information on the server and it’s plugins (not to mention all th warps like /warp bridges, /warp cannons, /warp ships, etc) Godsy has just made it possible to post wiki links directly in ingame chat so if newbies still can’t figure things out with the help of players and these numerous resources, I don’t know what will.
