spam filter is over-zealous

Any message that contains the letter ‘w’ three times at any position will not be allowed to post. This includes many benign messages using three separate words that each contain the letter ‘w’. Furthermore, it doesn’t even tell you why your message won’t post, but rather assumes that you were intentionally trying to post website spam. Probably 90% of the time it catches someone, they weren’t spamming at all.

I happen to have experience with this particular filter, so I was able to identify it the first time it happen to me. I was on another server that used it, and several of my messages weren’t posting, and I couldn’t figure out why. I opened tickets asking for help and never got any help. It took me a long time to figure out why it was happening. I imagine if I asked for help here, I’d get the same response.

Why don’t you save us all the headache and put in a script that checks just how much space there is between the instances of the letter ‘w’ so it doesn’t delete posts that aren’t spam? Or a simpler band-aid fix could be to mention in the error message why it didn’t let your message post to chat. At least that way people will understand why, and be able to figure out how to get around it.

What bugs me the most is that you are not allowed to post the same comment twice. That means if I were to write, say:

/c What bugs me the most is that you are not allowed to post the same comment twice.

But actually wanted to do /r (woops!), I would want to copy the above and correct it to:

/r What bugs me the most is that you are not allowed to post the same comment twice.

BUT Mr. Spam Fritter would then start spamming ME with warnings to “Please do not repeat the same (or similar) message.” 🙁

It actually wouldn’t let you post that in chat because it contains the letter ‘w’ three times. And then if you fix it by removing a ‘w’, and it reads like this: ‘What bugs me the most is that you are not able to post the same comment twice.’ it would not let you post it, and would say don’t post the same or similar comment twice, even though nobody has actually seen the message.

Yeah I agree sometimes I don’t talk to much in chat because I’m doing something I say wb 15 minutes later I try to say wb again and it won’t let me because of the spam filter even though it’s been 15 minutes.

www is the beginning of a website address http://www.somespam.com, its flagging as it thinks you are trying to spam URL’s. What word has 3 w’s in it? I cant think of any, it really cant be that common at all.

You did not give any examples.

I don’t think anyone is disputing that a chat filter is a necessary component to prevent advertising, linking and spam. The question is, are there settings in the plugin that can be altered to make the filter slightly less aggressive? I find it funny that players like myself are getting regular warnings, even though I for one have never polluted the chat channel in all my playtime on PirateCraft (aside from the very occasional use of bad language, I must concede… 😛 ).

Not one word, a whole sentence, or multiple sentences containing a total of 3 ‘w’s. Or maybe the filter is finding some other reason to block it out. Earlier today it blocked one of my messages because it said it was website spam, but the message contained only one ‘w’ and I couldn’t find any other suspicious components that it might think were website spam. I don’t remember the message, but next time it happens, I’ll post here what it blocked.

Just now it lowercased a single letter of a word, and told me not to use capslock. It then allowed me to post the same word immediately after, properly capitalized. I took a screenshot:

edit: oh I had capitalized ‘REALLY’ and ‘Flint’. But it was fine with ‘CAPS LOCK’.

I gotta agree with both sides here. On one hand we DO need the spam filter because there are always those idiots and bots.

However, it does get very annoying when, like galaxy said, I can’t say wb and then say it again 15 minutes later. Also even when I say two things that are remotely similar, it triggers the spam filter.

My proposition is that we get a timer so it doesn’t let you say the same exact thing for maybe 1 minute. (Don’t get mad because 1 minute is ridiculous, I am just throwing a random number out there) I realize this may be either extremely difficult or even impossible to do right now (I don’t know about these plugins too much) in which case we will just have to settle with what we have.
