A huge quality of Minecraft that I and many others enjoy would have to be the lack of boundaries.
You are given the freedom to create a multitude of whosie-whatsit’s, and the whatever-it-is-you-will’s.
The game is limitless, constantly expanding and evolving.
This quality is an extraordinarily delicate and definitive one, which is why I think that Worldborder should be removed. Now, riddance does bring up a few issues, but the benefits of removing Worldborder much further exceed that of keeping it.
Yes, removal it entails a huge map size.
However, with all of the unique players that log in on a day to day basis, a limited map means builds that are closer in proximity, which more often than not completely ruins the Minecraft experience.
But keeping it inhibits not only the availability of resources, but limits the canvas of players, let alone that of prospective builders.
Of course, one may argue that x amount of blocks is more than adequate for a server.
But, how does one limit the creative capacity and imagination?
In such a case, any amount of allocated blocks certainly will not suffice.
That is why I ask of you to honestly consider eradication of Worldborder. Thank you.
September 23, 2014 at 1:21 am #4739Before I respond I want to clarify that I am not an admin.
Even though you do have an okay point and you use a lot fancy words removing the world border is a bad idea. Correct me if Im wrong but im pretty sure that if more chunks are loaded (and by loaded I mean loaded for the first time) then the server gets more laggy. Also if the world border is removed entirely then everyone will be scattered to the ends of the earth and it would be difficult to travel say if your enemy, or friend who doesn’t have tp, because odds are that he/she is extremely far away from any warps.
September 23, 2014 at 2:01 am #4740The lag would be caused when chunks are loaded, which is only temporary until they are henceforth unloaded.
Personally, I think it gets much more interesting when you have to spend a bit of time looking for an enemy. It heightens the appeal.
If someone was to go out to a very far point, I think it’s obvious that if they were to lose the location that it will take quite a bit of time to return there, albeit they go out with this knowledge. So I don’t think it would be much of an issue, if they kept that fact in mind of course.
Also I apologize if my use of fancy words was a tad confusing, I have a tendency to do so when I’m passionate about a certain topic.
September 23, 2014 at 6:56 am #4741No. World border is in place to limit the lag experienced by the server. It is easy to find unexplored land, and set up a base. I am by no means an admin, however, there will soon be a world expansion, which would hopefully satisfy your needs.
September 23, 2014 at 8:39 am #4743Have a search around on the forums, we discuss a world expansion & there is a poll.
There are a lot of reasons a server uses a border.- Bigger world, More to manage by the server, may cause lag.
- Neat and tidy map, As you can see, somehow someone has managed to escape the worldborder more than once, Still have no idea how they did this, just look at how awful that looks.
- World sizes for backup. One thing everyone forgets about is backups, I create a backup every night automatically, each one of these files at present is 2GB, Thats already massive as it is.
- People could just keep moving forever in a direction with no limits, with a server this small there need to be some boundaries.
Im contemplating expanding the world while we wait for a 1.8 alternative, its going to take much longer this time as Bukkit is at a standstill.
September 23, 2014 at 12:48 pm #4744As the server grows, not necessarily in the amount of people on at any given time but in terms of unique hits in general, it should be seen that there’s a rapidly increasing demand for more space.
It is understood that yes, more storage space will be required. But in retrospect to how much storage space may be available, 2 GB isn’t much, even when compiled multiple times over. This however differentiates opinion wise.
I do appreciate the current plan of expansion being set forth, but it is also important to consider what would truly be adequate for a growing server.
But I understand that in the end the decision is not mine, so thank you for reviewing my outlook on the plugin.
September 23, 2014 at 3:43 pm #4746As I have said already check out the existing forum posts about map expansion, I do not like repeating myself.
If I keep the last 10 backups at 2gb each that’s 20GB, If I download that locally and make changes, then I have to re-upload it, this is the problem, uploading this many files (40k+) Took me 8 hours last time I had to do it, For this sized map.
There are already mature topics about map expansion, with polls for options to vote on your opinion, A removal of the border all together is a ludacris suggestion, expansion on the other hand is already thoroughly talked about, you will need to be patient.
September 23, 2014 at 10:39 pm #4747I apologize if anything said was irritating, making you feel the need to repeat yourself
Your points were acknowledged and understood.
The pros and cons were prior researched by myself, and very much so understand them.
Purposefully, this post was meant to delve between adverse opinions on the matter, and not meant to be taken offensively in any manner.
So to reiterate, I apologize if you felt so.
September 24, 2014 at 11:17 am #4748No sweat.
