Ahoy Mateys, This be Kai, And I have a proposition for ye. Recently I have noticed that some people are using some ships for transport of items. That being said, ships are a bit slow. Currently, any ship you get in, especially the smaller ones, can be outpaced by a person in god gear. Now, I know that if we speed them all up, that would cause major server lag. My proposition, is that some of the smaller ships get a speed increase. That way, the large ships with more blocks, are still slow, but can be outrun by smaller ships. Many pirates back in the day used that very method to attack large merchant vessels. The take away being that you can’t fit as many cannons on the smaller ships. I feel like if more people start using ships for transport and the smaller ships get speed increases, this may promote more piracy on the seas and possibly open more ports on the outer edges of the map and promote ship battles.

Kai, I see the dilemma and this has been discussed many times.
However, if we encourage this behaviour, of players using boats to haul gear across the sea, we could soon see larger ships doing this also.
The only thing is, we as a community need to mediate ourselves to encourage this sort of activity, there will always be 1 group of people who ruin it all for the majority, but if we can all try and make this majority much bigger than that of the minority, we will see improvements.
I for one cannot see speeding up boats the solution right now, though a small speed boost could be administered to most small ships if it gathers enough support.
Like bislo says and you note, god gear (doubt the impacts of removing or DE-buffing that though will work), depth strider, vanilla boats and speed boost potions all help reduce use of the plugin boats.
The only plausible thing which would be reduced/removed would be depth strider (2), as that is the only thing which could not impact gameplay as a whole.
The removal of god gear will be unpopular with a large percentage of the server, those who come to be pirates, those who I know have matured enough to support the use of plugin boats e.g. TAS, HYDRA. To which you may disagree with me, but these people love the server also and its community, I also believe that many in either crew would love the increased use of ships, but they know of that small minority which will ruin it for them possibly, as well as the fact that relatively few other players use these ships, and so feel less inclined to do so as there is nothing to combat/attack on the seas.
The removal of vanilla boats- again we cannot do this, new players would be utterly confused and probably would be put off, also I would like everyone who is for this to count how many times they have used a vanilla boat and how its removal could be detrimental to the server, though we could use the plugin boats instead, the vanilla boats are still vital.
And speed potions, they need to be kept also for gameplay aspects, we could perhaps see if we could reduce their effect in water, but I doubt that would get very far.
Unless if we can come up with a solution, which possibly rewards people for using plugin boats but cannot be abused (as it probably would be), then only those people who have been use the plugin boats for what they’re supposed to be used for on rare occasions will be sailing the high seas.
Anyway, just my take and idea of the subject.
April 6, 2018 at 12:30 pm #57411No one says anything about removing god gear actually, I just want to clear that out.. only detph strider, which makes you faster than boats = boats obsolete in any combat situation.
I personally would also like to remove vanilla boats and i believe I’ve voiced that somewhere else too, because they make ships obsolete from a transport point of view.
So, with our current environment you are better off in a fight, in water, rather than on a ship and you are also better off in a vanilla boat, while transporting things, rather than the ships.
So why ever use ships, other than for the aesthetic looks and the feels? ..and also adding the huge risk of someone coming over and stealing or torching your hours of work. – I’d pick the vanilla boat any day, but if it was not there I could be forced to use the ships and if you add the opportunity to put a lot of chests on board, then it would also give incentive to use instead of tp, as u can only tp with 1 inventory at the time, unless u have the shulkerboxes of course.
building on to that, if you have loaded ships, you also get pirates who want those goods and without either depth strider nor vanilla boats, they are in fact forced to hunt you in their own built ships, right? and the incentive to actually steal your things rather than just blowing the ship up just for the heck of it, might also mean more ships survive longer – maybe? idk. all in all I think we could see some very positive changes to the environment and the style of game play.
Idk what you need the vanilla boats for so much that it can’t be replaced by a plugin ship though. Maybe it will confuse newbs, but I’m sure they’ll get over it as they discover the way to sail is through your own built ships.. I only see the vanilla boats gone as a less convenient way of going shorter distances by sea very fast. I think that’s ok, because if you wanna cross an ocean, you can’t just drop a boat from your back pocket really.. and its not like it takes that much longer to just build a small plugin craft and then piloting it, unless you are crossing a pont of course.
Anyway, It was nothing more but a hopeful joke.. I know this will never be changed as popularity would never allow it.
Let me just finish off by saying that I really admire Max’s commitment to throw ship battle events. That way we can at least have good experiences where the plugin do see proper usage and the contestants can use the ships like they are supposed to. 😀

April 6, 2018 at 12:45 pm #57412well it wouldn’t make much lag, this is because i know some servers where there are like 5v5 shipbattles like every 5 minutes. to top that they use tnt cannons, scatterchot and adjustable arc. this server was having troubles with the balance of ships, to solve this they made more streamline ships faster because they reduce lag, the ships that are not streamline make them slower.

@XeronApril 6, 2018 at 6:03 pm #57415That’s why you increase the distance a boat jumps during cruise, but also increase the time spacing between jumps. Make a boat jump 10 or 15 blocks instead of 1 or 2, but make it jump that far every 10 seconds, not every second or two.

It was basically a fire gun where they can burn their enemies’ ships. Also, concerning ship speed, can we just make cruise at maybe 5-7 seconds and increase the jump like JUSA said? Like, add new types of ships that are faster, maybe donator only 😛 .

April 7, 2018 at 8:20 pm #57431Also, keep depth strider. Water fights won’t be water fights without it @Bislo. As you know, PirateCraft is a PvP server. Thus, water fights fall in the same category with Minecraft pirates. Also, pirates are depicted on ships, which means PirateCraft should have more shipbattles :P! And the current ships have a few problems at the time, one of them is speed, and another is the blocks to put on the ships. Concrete would be a cool block to put on ships :(. Also, I know this is the wrong place, however this is somewhat related: Have cannon projectiles travel a few more blocks when shot into water? And maybe buff up fireworks again so sieges can actually be won when somebody is sitting is a fat box?

April 7, 2018 at 11:06 pm #57432well, as i know when ships move, it takes them a while to move blocks, so… a idea that can happen is that when it is moving, the command for it to move can be a bit slower so some movement may take place on the ship, (if you have no idea what i am talking about, use a ship, put cruise on, and walk,) if that little break in between movement was longer, then it would make easier travel on ships, and also making ships faster could be a possibility at that point, if that interval between movement was lengthened

April 10, 2018 at 2:59 pm #57499Since I have replied to this maybe 40 times, here is a copy and paste.
- Walking around while sailing
- Boarding a ship while sailing
- Crafting while sailing
- Loading a cannon while sailing
- Firing a bow while sailing
- PVP battle while sailing
You cant do ANY of those if you increase the speed of a ship, as all the ship is doing is teleporting you very fast when it moves.
We spent a very long time actually testing speeds, a VERY long time. Speed isn’t something we pulled out a hat.

If the developer ever fixes the turning and water ships from the updated version of the ship plugin, we will have 100000x more options to just test things live, the current version I cannot do that as a reload is needed to update any ship types, its awful. If anyone wants to help fix it, message me on discord, a developer is needed.

Wouldn’t work, fire spread on ships has been turned off for a while, so more incendiary weapons would be pointless.
The projectile we do want is carcass- which I haven’t seen added yet >:(
