Hey everyone!
So I’ve always been pretty convinced that this server has some pretty diverse culture, but I never really knew for sure about anyone, especially seeing as most (if not all) people speak English on this server, and the global chat is English-only, so I just wanted to ask:Do you speak any languages other than English? If so, which ones?
I speak Russian, which also helps me understand, but not speak, other Slavic languagesWhat are some of the things you find most interesting about a foreign culture?
I was rather surprised by the friendliness of people in America. Generally, in Ukraine, people kept to themselves a bit more, and it took a little while to adjust to the fact that strangers would smile and make small talk on the street and at bus stops. What are some interesting things you think people should know about your culture/country/language?
Ukraine, despite being overshadowed in size and wealth by many other former USSR members, was actually the origin point for the Slavs (More specifically, its capital, Kiev) and is very culturally rich, and despite the failing economy, you can still enjoy yourself for very little money. What are some of your favorite foods?
I’d have to say the ice cream. Technically not an ethnic food, but it is very amazing, and despite simplicity, it is both cheap and extremely tasty. As far as ethnic food goes, I’d have to say salo. Yes, it seems cliche, but it tastes so amazing on rye bread! For those of you who don’t know, salo is salted pig fat, and tastes amazing, even if it is amazingly unhealthy. My own sample responses are italicized under each question. You obviously don’t have to answer every question, or answer any of them. Or, you could just put whatever information you want about your language/culture/country. I just thought that this would be a fun, interesting way to see more of the cultural diversity around PirateCraft.
November 8, 2016 at 10:51 pm #43105I was born, raised, and currently live in the United States. English is my first language, but I have been studying Spanish for four years now and have been able to hold conversations with native speakers to the language.

While I’m an American, I’ve spent some time in other countries as a kid (army brat) and in my own travels. I love to travel and try (although sometimes poorly) to learn other languages, not bad at German or Spanish, a tiny bit of French, and a smattering of Japanese and Chinese. I would love to hit the lotto so I could travel and spend more time learning languages (and sampling the food – like those folks on globe trekker).
Favorite foods, lol, whatever’s handy 🙂 really, though, I like authentic, homemade foods from the local community or ethic background of the chef. Then you know its the real deal.
My favorite thing about my own culture is Baseball, greatest game ever (imho). Go Cubs!!!

But seriously, I have heard several people say stuff like “sorry for the bad English.” If you are one of these people, don’t worry! You speak English well and nobody would’ve known that English isn’t your first language. In fact, it seems like foreigners speak English better than Americans do, especially in the server chat where English speaking people aren’t concerned with proper English and foreigners try to use more proper English so English speaking people can understand them. I’m sure there’s a lot of culturally diverse people on, but unfortunately, you just can’t tell.
Sorry for the tangent. My comments tend to come out longer than they should.
November 9, 2016 at 1:50 am #43112@Popcornone to be honest most people with english as a second language most of the time speak it better than native english speakers

The cultures of Japan and colonial western Europe are the most interesting in my opinion. The things that are most interesting about those two is the fact that Japan was able to go from an uncivilized set of tribal kingdoms to an Empire that was the first Asian country to defeat a European superpower, and how Western Europe came to be the nest of the greatest civilizations to ever exist.

I hope to one day become of Australia Prime Minister and reform the government to a Right-Wing Nationalist utopia.
(I refer to Tasmania as a separate body to Australia, because It’s quite autonomous compared to other states. Goddamn Turnbull won’t do anything. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Parliament have forgotten us.)

I can't stand vinegarNovember 9, 2016 at 6:50 am #43124I’m part Irish, part English. Buut, when I say English, I don’t mean stiff upper lip Oxfordridgechesterforthshireton. No, I mean the dirty part of England; the South West. Home of cider, cheese, and farmers. Oh boy, there are lots of farmers.
When it comes to foreign languages, I know a smattering of Welsh and Irish, and can hold a conversation in French (to a degree), although it is by no means my strongest area.
My favourite food has to be some of our local cuisine. Fish and chips is brilliant, but from personal experience, little else can beat an authentic ploughmans on a hot summer’s day. Apples too are a pastime round here; we cook them, boil them, mash them, drink them, squeeze them (then drink them again), and sometimes just give them to total strangers (this is actually a thing).
My half Irish-ness comes into play with regards to my accent, making me even more incomprehensible. But, we do have a home over there, and family, so I spend about 3-4 months every year enjoying hot sun, tanned girls, sandy beaches and exotic cuisine. Ha, no. Living in Ireland is much the same as living in the South West; every stranger becomes your best friend, you can only understand 1/3 people (which makes making these friends a real gift) and everybody knows absolutely everybody.
I have plans to explore the great wild world, and despite the fact I’m a minecraft nerd (sorta true!) I’m hoping to enlist in the Royal Navy as an officer. Difficult, but achievable, and it’ll mean I can realise my dreams of seeing the world!
November 9, 2016 at 6:07 pm #43151Origin:
I am as German as they come. Grew up on the commie-side – hence learned Russian. But don’t ask me to hold a conversation anymore.
English came later and since I am living right smack in the middle of the US, I am even dreaming in English now :/ . In my latter days I also picked up Sarcasm which I am totally fluent in – ask anyone that knows me.Cultures:
I love to travel and love the experiences other cultures bring. Foreign food, people, music, & traditions can enrich you ! I think it is important for anyone to see other people and countries and get out there !Stereotypes about my Culture:
Not all Germans love Fussball and drink warm beer.
Bavaria is not Germany ! 😉Food:
My absolute favorite Food is Quark with baked potatoes. I miss it!I love how this server brings all cultures together. We are all basically another species – block people, that don’t have nationalities. Yeah, crews – I guess – but still, we are all pirates. English -as the main chat language- is rather just a common ground for communication purposes. So, in piratecraft – gender, age, nationality don’t really matter; the only thing that does is your personality !
Thanks Gods for building this great community !

November 9, 2016 at 8:13 pm #43153Origin:
This is a little bit complicated but I’ll get at it. My father is French and mother is Turkish, they had me Los Angeles and then our family moved to London. I later moved to Paris where I live now. So thanks to my parents, by the age that I knew how to speak, I knew how to speak three languages ; French from my father, Turkish from my mother and English at school and outside of home. When arrived in Paris my parents were thoughtful to put me into an international school because of my ability to speak different languages and here I am now, learning German, second year and also learning Chinese for the 4th year now. ( I think )
Cultures: I’ve learned that German people are adorable when I went for a week to meet an exchange student I’d been emailing for a few months and saw that their cities and roads, public transportation and everything are much better made and maintained than here in France. Same thing with the Netherlands, where I go from time to time to visit my Turkish cousins (children of the sister of my mother).
Fun facts : France is the most touristic country in the world, and there are 15 million people that visit the country annually MORE than there are people already living in the country. ( Paris during the summer is an invasion of tourists, especially under the Eiffel tower)
Another Fun fact : In Turkey, “Donkey Head!” is an insult that’s a mix between idiot and jerk, but in an old fashioned way. Also, in more remote parts of turkey, fruit is at an average of 1TL per kilo. (0.28EURO or 0.31DOLLARS)
I love all foods except junk food, my body reacts badly to it. (I vomit)
So yeah, that’s for my part!
Do not horse
November 9, 2016 at 9:53 pm #43163So, I’m a wee bit late to the party, but I still want to throw in information about meh’. ( This is also going to be a bit of a life story just because I want to >:D)
I am 1/2 American, 1/4 Spanish, and 1/4 Catalan ( Don’t know what that is? Then google it ). My American side is mainly from either Texas or Virginia, and they all came over to America near the beginning. I have ( dead ) family members that came over on the Mayflower, and I have family members that died fighting for Independence during the American Revolution.
On my Spanish/Catalan side ( my mother ), the story gets a little bit more hazy ( As in I don’t know as much ). We believe that my family has ancestors that are Moors, Vikings, Romans, Greeks, Spanish, Catalan, and other assorted different groups. We also think that we have ancestors that converted to Catholicism during the Spanish Inquisition so that they wouldn’t be killed, so that’s interesting. My Great-Grandfathers actually fought on opposing sides during the Spanish Civil War, and one of them was a Communist ( He even traveled to Russia ) and the other was a Socialist.
( Life story bit ) Now on to me! I was born and raised in the American state of Tennessee. I have lived here my entire life, and I have a slight southern accent. I have played Guitar for 5 years, and I have played Piano for 2. I can speak English fluently, but unfortunately I can barely understand a word of Spanish. I am currently learning how to speak Spanish, so that’s cool. I have been home schooled my entire life, and I have played football and basketball ( I’m 6′ 4″ so I have an advantage xD ). After High School, I plan on majoring in Architecture at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
Fun Fact: In my region of America, we call all soft-drinks Coke, no matter the brand or flavor, and if you ask for tea you will be given sweet tea.
My favorite cuisine has to be southern food. Whether it be Potatoes, Fried Chicken, or other foods, I’ll eat it all.
I think people should know that just because Southerners talk slightly different, we are not all redneck folk. I do have friends that are rednecks, but that is besides the point.
So yeah! That’s all I’m gonna say! I realize that I didn’t quite answer your question’s about culture, but I think that I covered my background pretty well xD If any of you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a mention or send me a message! 🙂

I am German, but I have lived in the UK for 14 years, and have a joint citizenship. I am fluent in both English and German, I can speak some Spanish. I live in the South of England, and I’m lucky to have the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (HMS Victory) just a few minutes drive away from me. I regularly go over there to take pictures for new ship designs that I use in-game.
Cultures:
I travel a lot around Europe, and I love the scenary and food in Eastern Europe. Outside of Europe, I would really like to visit Japan. The people, the rich culture and food are simply amazing.
My culture, (from where I currently live in England:
Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is a must see for anyone who loves ships. Fact. Apart from that, the scenery of the New forest is very nice down here. Fresh air, lots of opportunities to go sailing, fish and chips. I can’t complain really. Its a nice change from Germany, considering I spend a lot of time in-land near Frankfurt.
Food:
Pasta everything, and Mexican food. I love the spiciness of the Mexican food (not the American version of Tacos or whatever, I mean the authentic Mexican ones, made in Mexico). Mushrooms can go die in a hole.
Its nice seeing and reading about the diverse culture we bring together as one community. And with the internet – people can connect with one another from around the world, talk, play games, and chill. Its amazing if you consider it. 🙂

@XeronNovember 10, 2016 at 5:48 am #43182greetings, people of piratecraft. i am an american; i was born on a US base in England, but i was young when i left. too bad. i’ve lived in California. living in Texas for now.
i study french at university, and i am currently taking german as well. languages are fun!
i love to travel (who doesn’t). * i’ve been to these places twice: Hong Kong, Japan, S.Korea, Thailand, Singapore…and maybe some other places i can’t remember. those places were cool & those people were cool… * I got to spend a summer in France (Paris & Toulon). absolutely fabulous. the french were so nice (totally helps to know french). i must go again.
let me tell you what you should know about America: it’s a big ass country with a lot of very different people & ideologies, but most of us just call ourselves American. i think these days we are very much open to everyone’s culture (as opposed to the older generation that was very much self-absorbed). politics are very tricky, so let’s not go there (trust me, i study international relations). I agree this is mind blowing hearing from all you different people from around the world, and we all come together in our own PirateCraft Community. How Cool!
November 10, 2016 at 2:02 pm #43204First of all, what an amazing thread!
My real names Tom, I’m born and live in the UK, Pretty much full blown British, Im drinking Tea as I write this! My language skills are limited to English (How very British!), I think the only French I remember is “Omelette du fromage” from dexters lab! Ha! I’ve always been a fan of running communities online, I’ve had many projects before PirateCraft getting people together around a certain subject! The only other game server I’ve run before this was a Counter Strike Source server that had a niche of “glass” based maps.
When it comes to food, you cant beat your own home country’s favourites can you!? Mine is by far a British Roast dinner, usually Beef rules above all but I wont shy away from a Chicken or Pork roast! (Now im hungry!)
Im a massive fan of travel and finding out more about how different cultures live around the world, were all the same humans but we all live so differently! I’ve been to places around Europe, Africa, Asia and North America, Next on my wishlist is either Japan or Norway, maybe next year! One thing that really surprised me about NYC is how safe I felt in it, When your going around a new city its quite easy to feel a bit out of place, but its amazing how friendly a lot of people are in the USA.
Pets; I love Dogs
Music, I cant believe this one hasn’t made it here yet! Im a massive fan of music, I listen to loads, Metal, Rock, D&B, Ray, Electro, Classic, Country, Spotify is fantastic for finding new stuff daily! Maybe we should have a shared Spotify playlist?
