Recently, ships have come back into the limelight, and I was wondering if anyone had come up with a design of shipyard to mass produce ships. Perhaps by using a mould of blocks that just needs to be filled in with wood, and then have a crane drop the deck and sails on top?
Just wondering if this would be feasibly possible!
January 1, 2017 at 11:33 pm #45560Well Entaria has planned out the researching of mechanical slime block arms and a piston power block arranger to assembly line produce ships like an assembly line. And using plugin bridges and gates to manually 3D print out ships. But this research is postponed till the construction of Entaria’s shipyard building starts.

The big issue with this is that once you have the ship printed, you will need to dig it out of a giant block of dirt (or other filler block). Also, there isn’t really a good way to store a large amount of blocks to be used as filament (the stuff used to actually create the print). It probably involve a lot of sand towers and constantly replacing the filament as the ship is being printed.

January 2, 2017 at 12:03 am #45568I can’t remember who it was but many months ago some one showed me round their ship factory – it had moulds for the ship hull / sails and cranes to move sections around. It looked like it could be replicated if someone had the time to plan out a ship.

Cranes can attach to objects and rotate 90 degrees, allowing part of a ship to be in one location and for the crane to pick it up and move it onto the ship

I also had worked out how to build a ship elevator that could move ships on the Y level. If people were in my base before it got regened they might of seen the starting of it
January 2, 2017 at 2:20 am #45572My idea for the assembly line is to have people drive the ships and each station would attach a certain part. It would be faster, simpler, and more efficient.

January 2, 2017 at 3:22 am #45576I just want to point out that if any of you do plan on mass producing a certain type of ship, please come up with a good design for it. If we are gonna have 50 identical ships floating around, it better have a kickbutt design.
January 2, 2017 at 4:25 am #45579what would be interesting are modular ships, interchange parts by making them smaller ships, then put certain parts on if you need a heavy ship, fast ship, ect

You could have a mould for the sails, and then use a crane to move that onto the deck of the ship, which was also created with a mould. Thing is, does the hull need to be entirely submerged in water, or just a few blocks?
I might play around with this and build some simple schooner/dhow production lines.
January 2, 2017 at 4:06 pm #45601Try make simple ships, it’s most likely very hard to ‘3D’ print a ship, and even if someone does work out how to, it would probably be a very tedious process which could have been made quicker if you just built the thing in the first place.
It’s possibly better to build small ships, and then a larger transport ship to carry them in.
It’s quite a cool concept, and can work in theory and practice.
January 2, 2017 at 5:53 pm #45603Yea I use stone hulls to replicate my ships, the only issue is you cant make the bow of the ship as you need to drive it out of the mold.

I have actually tried this and it just doesn’t work well. I never built it on the server but in my testing world I made a bunch of 5×5 dhow parts that could be connected with stone brick. The whole thing ended up looking really clunky and it would’ve been pretty much unusable. It’s better to just make a big ship.
