On another forum post @Azure mentioned that there are plenty of fortified towns and players with fleets available to be attacked by those pvp and action loving players on PirateCraft. This is true and its all great fun to attack and siege towns but using ships to siege? That’s pointless.
I really want to have one of those stereotypical ship attacks where a well armed ship enters the cove of a town and plunders it really quickly and sets sail back into the ocean. This is not possible however since ships are extremely vulnerable to attack out of claims.
I have a fleet of 40+ ships and I usually do ship attacks on players just for the fun of it but they are pointless and I will always lose and never gain anything out of it. I think ships are great for traveling but pointless for attacking. If anyone reads the scenarios below, I’m pretty sure they will agree that ships don’t have much use for attacking people.
Scenario 1: player 1 and his crew sails a well armed ship to a cobble stone base to siege and attack with cannons. The cobblestone base is sieged and the crew pours clusterbombs into the base blowing a large section away. The fort is armed though and the ship blows up killing the players. All damage to the siege cobblestone base reverts but the ship is sunk for good. Player 1 gets absolutely nothing from this attack and is down 1 more ship from his fleet.
Scenario 2: Player 1 sails a ship with his crew and they siege a base. They blow holes into the walls of the base and immediately, everyone goes into the base to kill the defenders and loot what they have. The attackers win the siege and steal tons of great loot. Meanwhile, the defenders have respawned and realize they ahve an opportunity. 1 person places a double chest on the boat and claims it while the others gear up and kill the attackers that are stuck in their claim since all damage from the siege has reverted and they have no way out with people constantly punching them keeping them in pvp log. Eventually, the attackers are killed and lose the ship to the enemy and lose the loot that they stole.
I hope these two scenarios show people how under powered ships are and before I finish this post. I’m going to put one more note…
Note: I have done sieges with cannons before and I found out cannons loaded with clusterbombs literally do 0-1 block damage to a fort and are completely useless for sieging as well.
Because of this lack of power, I’m afraid to send any ships out for fear of losing them and completely wasting resources to blow up an entrance just to have it sealed up again. I literally just use ships to blockade towns or just for the good looks. They have almost no attacking use at all so I would actually rather not have those pvp oriented people coming to attack me.
The main point of all of this is that I think ships need a little tweak to make them more worthwhile to build and arm for battle on the high seas

Agreed.
February 18, 2015 at 6:08 pm #9190I think that following steps should be taken to improve the situation:
1. All ship types (maybe with exception of dhow) should be give a CRUISE ability.
2. Ships should move faster, making them more efficient then conventional minecraft boat.
3. Cannons and TNT should deal reasonable demage during /siege, making all bases siegable with some effort---

@GodsDead can tell you more about the plugin specifics, and see which can be modified, but remember we are at the mercy of the developer.February 18, 2015 at 6:35 pm #9196February 18, 2015 at 8:12 pm #9208Believe me, I have wanted an intriguing ship system for battles for a long time, Its all well and good asking for something, but there needs to be a technical method to back this up.
I have some big ideas that I want to put into play to do with ships, bit thats a while off until I can get everything I want to get done sorted.
Things that reset and readily available ships are all systems that would be better off in an arena, Im highly considering buying another server to run a few separate games, Arenas inside a survival server get just a bit too confusing and there are conflicts.
February 18, 2015 at 9:39 pm #9214What if we built a large glass dome or square in the middle of the ocean and held ship battles there?
February 19, 2015 at 1:23 am #9221@GodsDead could you possibly buff ships in terms of speed? I also noticed that the cruise feature on subs might be broken since I was sailing one yesterday and cruise sign turned on/off but sub didn’t move forward any blocks at all

There already high in speed, do remember that these do not act like normal minecraft entities, each time you press forwards once, its having to break and rebuild every block in the right place.
What would be better would be to nerf the speed of the default boat.

Please don’t nerf boats; instead maybe give them a reason to be speedy (like a motor or some oars) I don’t know.
Keep in mind there are some players who lag to much to even run ships; people who are here for the pirate theme. Dhingies are NOT OP, they break the moment you hit something (blocks, mobs, or other players), you frequently get kicked for ‘flying’ while riding one, etc. I’m just saying, it already has enough downsides to make up for the speed.
February 19, 2015 at 8:13 pm #9263The reason I usually use normal boats and not ships is because travelling with ships affects your hunger bar while crafted boats do not.
February 19, 2015 at 10:52 pm #92691)Remove Vanilla boats as Wkeresey and I suggested months ago 2) limit teleporting even more
Also Scenario 1) Siege damage does not revert
And to the Vanilla boat lovers…. Build actually sailing ships BECAUSE you can actually build sailing ships ! Any server can have a 5 block boat… But not all servers can have a pirate ship 🙂
Lucky you will be missed 🙁
February 20, 2015 at 2:43 am #9276@Unic0rnjunk101 And what about players like myself whose computers won’t ALLOW them to use the movecraft ships? The people without the money for nice computers who can barely even pilot the little boats?
