There has been a nice production by the BBC on the Great War (sorry it’s particularly British,) it focuses on different branches of the forces and those who stayed at home and their experiences.

You don’t have to be British just to get something out of it, in the Army bit there is an interview with a German soldier and his reliving of his experience when face to face with a French soldier.
